Total Hip Replacement
The replacement of an artificial hip is performed trough the classic
standard procedure
or with the minimal invasive technique.
At the Orthopaedic Clinic Gersthof approximately 500 hip replacements are performed yearly.
The principal operative steps performing total hip joint
replacements are shown in the following illustrations:
1. Removal of the femur head
2. Implantation of the acetabular

prosthesis consisting of a metal cup

and a polyethylene liner
3. Reaming of the femur canal

4. Implantation of the stem of the prosthesis
5. Impaction of the femoral head
6. Reposition of the new hip joint
In case of a minimal invasive operation technique the new prosthesis is implanted without releasing muscle
insertions. For this technique new adapted instruments are required.
